Jan Dekker Holland meets Gary Thomson at anĀ England Apocalypse. It was strategically placed by the M25 at Lakeside, Thurrough.

You could see the difference in physique. You could see the difference in years. But you could not split hairs in this nailbiter which went right up to the tiebreaker.

Dekker’s proud father looked on resolutely as the 20 year old student from the Netherlands showed budding youngsters what was possible. With cool, sharp, unwavering arrows piercing the felt, the pink-shirted young punkster somewhat took the mickey out of experience. And you could see him starting to love it. Click it.

I was quite shocked, at times, as I watched the level of the game being raised big-time by this young man. He’s undoubtedly set to bring a devastating combo of youthful sporting hero coached by intelligent, technique-savvy Dad to a sport that has needed an image re-boost for at least a decade.

I’ll level with you if it wasn’t already clear. I haven’t watched darts since “Barney Rubble on the Double”, but I was caught up in the euphoria along with all darts fans as Dekker hit the final double. Don’t get me wrong – it was a quality performance and a real duel fuelled by Thomson, who had at least four outs earlier on.

However, even as an Englishman, I was standing up cheering when Dekker pulled off what was looking more and more like the inevitable, as he serenely and Buddha-esquely dominated the end-game.

The game took a huge step forwards towards the ultimate ockey and both players should take the credit.

I’d go for it right here! Rush!
